Burning Smell, Sparks or a Hot Plug: What to Do Immediately

QUICK ANSWER
If there is flame, smoke, active arcing or immediate danger, get people out and call the appropriate emergency service. Never use water on an energised electrical fire. If there is a burning smell, melting, sparks or a hot plug without active fire, stop using the point, do not touch damaged parts, isolate only if a normal control is safe to reach and obtain urgent professional help.
If there is active fire or smoke
Warn everyone nearby and move away from the immediate hazard.
Leave the property or affected area if there is immediate danger.
Call the fire or emergency service. Give the address, property type and what you observed.
Do not use water on an energised electrical fire and do not re-enter to retrieve items.
Only use normal isolation if it is clearly safe to reach and doing so will not bring you closer to smoke, fire, arcing or wet equipment.
Tell the electrician or emergency responder about solar, batteries, an inverter, generator or other supply sources.

If there is no flame, but you smell burning or see heat damage
Stop using the affected plug, socket, switch, appliance or circuit. Keep people away and do not touch melted plastic, exposed parts or a hot enclosure. A plug that becomes hot, a socket that discolours, intermittent sparks, crackling or a persistent “electrical” smell can indicate overheating or arcing and should be treated urgently.
If an ordinary wall switch or breaker controlling the affected circuit is safely accessible, you may isolate through that normal control. Do not remove a faceplate, DB cover or plug body. Do not pull a stuck, melted or smoking plug from the socket.

Why plugs and sockets become hot
Possible categories include a loose or deteriorated connection, damaged accessory, poor contact between plug and socket, overloaded multi-plug, unsuitable extension use, appliance fault, conductor damage or a circuit problem. Heat can worsen the connection, which creates more heat. The visible accessory may be only part of the fault.
This is why replacing a melted plug top or socket without testing can miss the cause. The circuit, appliance and connection conditions must be assessed together.
What different symptoms may indicate

What not to do
- Do not use water on an electrical fire.
- Do not cover the smell with fragrance and continue using the point.
- Do not wrap melted wiring or a damaged plug in tape as a repair.
- Do not hold a breaker on or repeatedly reset a tripping device.
- Do not fit a larger fuse or breaker.
- Do not open the DB board, socket, switch, appliance or inverter.
- Do not assume that turning off grid power makes solar or battery equipment de-energised.
- Do not let children, tenants, staff or pets near the affected area.
What the electrician will need to know
- Exact location and property address.
- Whether there is active smoke/flame, or only smell/heat/damage.
- Which appliance or equipment was operating.
- Whether the power tripped or lights flickered.
- Any recent renovation, repair, solar/inverter work or water leak.
- Whether the property has batteries, generator supply or multiple DB boards.
- Photos taken only from a safe distance—never move closer for a better picture.
After the immediate repair
Ask for the cause and scope to be explained, not only the damaged part to be replaced. Depending on the event, the professional may need to test the circuit, protective devices, earthing, affected equipment and neighbouring connections. If the repair changes the installation, ask what test and certification records are required.
Keep invoices, defect notes, photographs and any certificate with the property records. If an insurance claim may be involved, contact the insurer or broker promptly and follow their evidence requirements; do not assume a particular claim outcome.
Preventing a repeat
- Stop using cracked, loose, scorched or damaged plugs, cords and sockets.
- Avoid overloaded adapters and permanent reliance on extension leads.
- Keep electrical equipment away from water and weather unless designed and installed for that use.
- Have repeated trips, flickering, buzzing or heat investigated early.
- Use competent, appropriately registered people for installation work and certification.
- Review circuits and capacity before adding high-load equipment.

- Is a hot plug normal?
- A plug or charger can feel mildly warm in normal operation, but unusual heat, pain to touch, smell, discolouration, looseness or melting is not something to ignore.
- Can I unplug a smoking appliance?
- Do not touch a smoking, melted, stuck or electrically active plug. Move away, isolate only if safely possible and call emergency or professional help appropriate to the danger.
- The smell stopped. Is it safe to use again?
- Not necessarily. Heat or arcing can be intermittent. Keep the point out of use until assessed.
- Should I call the fire service or an electrician?
- Active fire, smoke or immediate danger calls for emergency services first. A burning smell, heat or sparks without fire still needs urgent professional electrical help.
- Can solar panels or batteries remain live when the main supply is off?
- Yes, alternative sources can change the hazard. Tell responders and do not assume one switch has made every part safe.
